The Economic, Health, and Social Benefits of Conservation — An Action-Oriented Research Project

Synthesizing Research to Inform Conservation Actions for The Nature Conservancy’s ‘Our Natural Interest’ Coalition

Over the past two decades, researchers have analyzed the benefits provided by America’s natural lands and waters. Their research establishes the many benefits of conserving those natural resources in certain locales: jobs created, coastal zones protected, and rates of obesity reduced. While the studies’ individual findings are valuable, their real weight becomes apparent when taken as a whole. Collectively, they tell a powerful story: conservation of lands and waters is not an optional amenity, but the cornerstone of thriving economies and a foundation of community health and safety.

Land and Water Connections helped lead a nationwide survey and synthesis of the abundant published data on the economic, health, and social benefits of conservation in the United States. The final assessment outlines findings from nearly 600 articles and studies, including hundreds of peer-reviewed papers, as well as government and industry reports. The project launch event included endorsements from Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Senator Steve Daines (R-MT).
